How Can Somatic Movement And Dance Help Your Anxiety?
Somatic movement integrated into embodied dance will release anxiety and stress.
It is the essence of movement performed consciously, with the intent of an internal experience instead of looking for an external appearance of outcome.
If they think of dance, most people think of highly choreographed dance forms; the most popular ones are Ballet, Ballroom, hip-hop, Jazz, and Tap. When we think of movement and exercise, we think of gym and HIIT workouts or high-intensity exercises.
I remember in high school learning ballroom dance—remembering and repeating steps. However, my rhythms did not match theirs. I wanted to move and follow my body. Instead, I was told to follow theirs. I felt dorky, odd, and stiff, making me anxious.
Later, I realized I am capable and coordinated after studying somatic movement and dance. Following my rhythms released my anxiety and allowed my authentic movements to arise. This embodied dance opens my senses and emotions; it releases energy, and the joy of movement comes to light. I listen to my body's messages to open doors. It changed my life.
Dances are essential in ancient healing practices, letting go of anxiety for mental health. Research shows it is integral to socialization, expression, and community and builds societal health. Ancient healing dances were practiced by American Indian tribes and banned and defeated by the US Army.
Today, we know better! We understand better how ancient traditions and rituals can heal.
"Eventually, dance intervention will likely be employed as a proven preventive measure, like daily aspirin is prescribed for specific health conditions as a precaution."
Neuroscientists found that it releases stress, anxiety, and depression and helps even with self-esteem and cognitive functions.
We at Aurras Transformation use somatic movement and authentic dance to live a peaceful and purposeful life and heal body, mind, and spirit.
